6th Grade Exploration, Unit 1: Food For Thought
Unit Essential Question:
| How does food impact my identity, my local community, and our planet? |
Unit 1 Description:
| In this unit, we will explore the topic of food through an interdisciplinary (multi-subject) lens. We will consider how food affects identity and culture. We will build our knowledge of plants and how things grow, and where our food comes from. We will learn about how food justice impacts different communities, and we will think about how we can take action to make sure that everyone has the same access to healthy, affordable food. |
In this unit, we will explore the topic of food through three specific learning lenses.
| Learning Lens | Guiding Question | |
| #1 | Food and Culture | How does food represent the values and traditions of different cultures? |
| #2 | Plants, Food Systems, and Sustainability | How can sustainable practices be used in growing, distributing, and consuming food? |
| #3 | Food Justice | How can we ensure access to healthy affordable food for all communities? |
Food Stories Project Overview:
| In this project, you’ll become a food storyteller! You’ll interview a family or community member to learn about a special recipe that carries meaning, memory, and tradition. Then, you’ll explore where one of the ingredients comes from and how it can be grown or made in a way that helps the planet. Finally, you’ll reflect on what this food says about identity, culture, and fairness in our food systems. Your finished “Food Story” will combine personal storytelling, research, and reflection to show how one dish can connect people, places, and the planet — and you’ll help create a class Community Cookbook that celebrates the many food stories in our classroom. |
