School Musical Auditions: Into the Woods

The talent department will be holding auditions for the Spring musical: Into The Woods JR. Students interested in auditioning for the school musical must be present for both audition days or she or he will not be considered for a role. A role in the musical is a serious commitment. Rehearsals will be held from 2:20-3:50 every  Wednesday and Thursday  after the callback auditions, through May 21, 2015. Students must be willing to commit to these two rehearsals per week.

Description of the Musical:

The Brothers Grimm “go Broadway” as Sondheim and Lapine offer up a cockeyed fairy tale in Into The Woods JR., an adaptation of one of Sondheim’s most popular works designed especially for young performers.

All of your favorite characters—Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk), and the Witch—meet and interact in this whimsical original story. The musical centers on a baker and his wife who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the king’s festival; and Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk. When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch’s curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse and wind up changed forever.

Into The Woods JR. is a funny and engaging way to get young people to think about the stories with which they’ve grown up and the ethical issues raised therein.

Preparation:

  • Prepare to sing a song of your choice. Students may sing any song for the audition however, it is recommended that the selection not mimic a popular performer’s style, but rather display originality and technical proficiency. All songs will be performed a cappella (without accompaniment).
  • Prepare a 1 minute monologue of your choice.  If you do not have a prepared monologue, you may choose one that we’ll have available to read the day of the audition (but you’ll likely feel more prepared and confident if you prepare one in advance).  You may also be given “sides” or selections from the play to read with a partner at the audition or call-back.

Please visit www.broadwayjr.com,  then click on Resources.  Then choose Audition Central, and from the list of musicals on the right, click on Into the Woods Jr.  You will then see a breakdown of characters with their descriptions and a small sample of their lines and songs.  You may use this to become familiar with the play and prepare for your audition.

  • Students need to wear comfortable clothing for the dance audition on Thursday. Students do not need to prepare a solo. They will learn a short movement sequence in the audition and then perform it.

Stage Manager/Crew Positions:

  • Interviews for Stage Manager and tech/stage crew will be held on the dates that we have call-backs- Wednesday, January 21 2:20-3:50 pm and Thursday, January 22 2:20-3:50 pm.  The Stage manager will need to be at all rehearsals.  Tech/stage crew will need to be available for both Wednesdays and Thursday rehearsals as we get closer to the production date, probably in April.

Sign Up Procedure:

  • Sign Ups will be posted outside the Dance studio (room 306) starting January 6, 2015.
  • Your child must sign up with her or his full name and class number.
  • Your child must sign up before Wednesday, January 14, 2015.

If selected for a role in the musical, please make sure your child can commit to the rehearsal schedule. In order to maintain professionalism and consistency, it is of great importance each cast member is present for all rehearsals. Best of luck to all auditioning and enjoy the winter break!

Sincerely,

The MS 447 Arts Department
