All of our students will learn about communities in need this year.
- The 6th grade is hosting a “Toys for Tots” drive. New, unwrapped toys for children of all ages are welcome. Deadline: Friday, December 19th.
- The 7th grade is creating decorations which will be displayed at a local “Y” that offers shelter and other services. Also, as part of a unit on helping the homeless, they are collecting toiletries to donate to youth in need through the non-profit organization Safe Horizon.
- The 8th grade will learn more about communities in need and work on contributing to a school based project of ‘giving’.
More about the the toiletry drive
In New York City, there are not nearly enough beds to house the teens who have left home to escape abusive or impoverished situations. We are working with the non-profit organization Safe Horizon to support their efforts to “move victims of violence from crisis to confidence” by supplying toiletry kits to their youth clients. These kits will allow youth who are living in temporary housing, on the street, or with friends and family to maintain their dignity as they transition to more stable living arrangements.
Each official class is charged with collecting certain items. We will be collecting these items until December 10th; then we’ll package them into kits to be delivered to the Streetwork drop-in centers, where Safe Horizon will distribute them to those in need.
Please check the list below for items requested and where to bring the donations – give generously!! Travel- or small-sized items are most useful. (you can donate items for other classes, of course!)
