Schoolwide Summer Reading

We’re excited to announce the launch of our Schoolwide Summer Reading program! This summer, all MS 447 students and teachers will read The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Young Readers Edition, by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer. This memoir tells the true story of how William Kamkwamba’s determination helped him to overcome extreme hardships in his village in Malawi. The book is specifically written for young readers, and includes photographs and illustrations.

Students and teachers are asked to read this book over the summer, and on Thursday, September 8 & Friday, September 9 – our opening days of the 2016-2017 academic year – our school community will engage in activities and book club meetings to discuss the book. We’ll be thinking about how William’s story connects to our lives here in Brooklyn, and how we can use his story to motivate and inspire us. It will be a great way for students and teachers to reconnect after a fun summer, and to kick off another successful school year!

Copies of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Young Readers Edition will be available for purchase at a discounted price of $6.00 through MS 447.  Please send payment for your child’s copy in cash or check, along with the order form below, to your child’s ELA teacher as soon as possible.  All students will receive a copy of The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Young Readers Edition before the last day of school, regardless of ability to pay. Additionally, all MS 447 parents are invited to participate and read the book as well – if there is sufficient interest we can organize parent book-club meetings as well!

If you have additional questions about our schoolwide summer reading program, please contact our parent-teacher coordinator, Amy Sirot, All students should finish reading the book in time for the first day of school, Thursday, September 8, 2016.  Please note, there are three versions of this book and we will be reading the “Young Readers Edition.” Thanks for your support and cooperation, and have a great summer! See you in September!
