Schoolwide Summer Reading Program

Welcome to year two of our Schoolwide Summer Reading program! This summer, all MS 447 students and teachers will read Hidden Figures: Young Readers Edition, by Margot Lee Shetterly. This nonfiction book tells the amazing true story of four African-American female mathematicians at NASA who helped achieve some of the greatest moments in our space program.

Students and teachers are asked to read this book over the summer, and on Friday, September 8 – our second day of the 2017-2018 academic year – our entire school community will engage in activities and book club meetings to discuss the book. We’ll be thinking about how the contributions of the book’s heroines have influenced our lives today, and how their legacy lives on in the fields of science, math and technology. It will be a great way for students and teachers to reconnect after a fun summer, and to kick off another successful school year!

Copies of Hidden Figures: Young Readers Edition will be available for purchase at a discounted price of $6.00 through MS 447.  Please send payment for your child’s copy in cash or check, along with the order form below, as soon as possible. All students will receive a copy of Hidden Figures: Young Readers Edition, regardless of ability to pay. Additionally, all MS 447 parents are invited to participate and read the book as well – if there is sufficient interest we can organize parent book-club meetings as well!

We would like to acknowledge the support we’ve received from Community Bookstore of Park Slope (143 7th Ave, Brooklyn), for ordering the books for us and passing a substantial discount on to our school community. For students and parents who are interested, Community Bookstore is also stocking the original version of the book, Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Who Helped Win the Space Race. Students are welcome to read either version of the book for summer reading.

If you have additional questions about our schoolwide summer reading program, please contact our parent-teacher coordinator, Amy Sirot, at All students should finish reading the book in time for the first day of school, Thursday, September 7, 2017.

Thanks for your support and cooperation, and have a great summer! See you in September!
