MS 447 Community – With us fast approaching the Martin Luther King Holiday and our up-coming Peace & Diversity Conference we would like to send out a few reminders. Formost is for you to know that you are welcome to attend the day. The students and staff will be engaged in many meaningful activities. If you would like to stop in to take part in the day please let Ms. Castro know so accomodations can be made. JCastro10@schools.nyc.gov

The above quotes are just a sample of our “Vote the Quote” campaign. Students will have an opportunity to vote on these and many other quotes as we begin preparations for a new school mural on our ‘ramp’.

On the day of the event, Jan. 21st, we are encouraging students to wear an item of significance to them, their family, or culture. This may be a religious medallion, colors of a nation of origin, team jersey for a favorite family sports team, or some other momento. Students may simply wear a shirt with a peaceful symbol or message or portrait of a past or present ‘peace’ leader. Imagine where we would be today if among us stood Martin Luther King Jr., Anne Frank, Harvey Milk, Golda Meir, Mahatna Gandhi, John Lennon, Eleanor Roosevelt, Nelson Mandela, and so so many other inspirtational and peaceful leaders. Students will ‘share out’ about what they are wearing in one of our opening activities.

We are still looking for donation of plain white tee-shirts (undershirts) in all sizes. We also need fabric markers or sharpies. Please send those items to the attention of Ms. Katz or Ms. Corvinelli.

We are expecting a host of visitors who are coming to help us celebrate the day. Most importantly, we are preparing our students for what promises to be momentous event. This day is not only a celebration of who we each are, but a reminder of where we are heading – as individuals and as a community. Plans are in place for many follow up lessons and activities in our school’s advisory program. Please stay informed and involved as we move forward together into the new year.

Best Always, MS 447 Staff and Administration
