Parent Engagement Series: Talking About Race Part 4

As we continue to work towards our goal of creating and maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for all of our community members and equipping ourselves with tools to discuss race, racism and equity with our children, we are going to introduce the parents of our community to Affinity Groups. Affinity groups bring people together based on a shared self-identification such as race, ethnicity, gender or sexual identity.  For the purpose of continuing our discussions on race we will meet together in groups defined by racial identity.  We will meet  in two separate affinity groups, one for those who identify as a person of color and one for those who identify as white.  Although members of an affinity group may not share the same identification or experiences, we recognize that their identity has an effect on the way they move through and experience the world.  The goal of our affinity groups is to facilitate positive identity exploration and development towards a larger goal of creating an inclusive and thriving learning environment for all of our community members, particularly our students, and to be able to teach our children to work against systems of oppression.
