ALERT: School Calendar Change May 15, 2014

Dear Families,

As you may know, this year NYC schools, in accordance with state requirements, have implemented a new teacher evaluation system.  A significant component of this system entails administering and scoring local assessments at the beginning and end of the school year in order to measure teacher effectiveness.  The following letter details the test administration structure we will use in this spring, as well as an important calendar change that we have been approved to make.

Administration of spring assessments:  The spring assessments will be given in May for three subject areas.  For each assessment, we will freeze the school, similarly to the schedules for state exams.  All testing modifications (extended time, separate location, etc.) for students with IEPs or 504s will be honored.  Student grades and promotion decisions are not impacted by these assessments; however, these assessments are a significant factor in teachers’ year-end ratings.  The dates of the assessments are as follows:

May 6: Science
May 14: ELA
May 15: Social Studies

Calendar change for assessment scoring: Because all assessments must be scored by our teachers, the Department of Education has provided schools with an opportunity to request changes to the school calendar in order to set aside time for this.  In accordance with guidelines set forth by the DOE, we first obtained approval from the PTA, and subsequently held a staff School Based Option (SBO) vote in which teachers approved the changed.  We have been approved for a half day for students on May 15, 2014.  Students should report to school for the Social Studies assessment, and will be dismissed at 11:30 a.m.  Any student who would like to have school lunch may do so.  All extended day and after school programs will be cancelled on that day.  Students who receive busing will be picked up from school at 11:30.

We appreciate your flexibility and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
