A Message From the Principal

Dear MS 447 Parents and Guardians,

Autumn is here, the weather is cool, and Parent-Teacher Conferences are right around the corner!  I would like to take a few moments to share information with you about signing up for conferences and other important goings-on around our school.

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Our fall Parent-Teacher Conferences will be on Tuesday, November 19th, from 12:30-3:00 and 5:30-8:00 pm.  Each family will schedule a 15-minute appointment with an assigned teacher.  At your appointment, the teacher will review your child’s progress report, highlight your child’s successes and challenges in all of his/her classes, and share feedback from other staff.  If you wish to follow up with other teachers, you will be able to do so during open classroom hours, from 2:00-3:00 and 7:00-8:00.

Signing Up: By now, you should have received a bright orange paper with instructions for making your for your conference appointment online.  If you did not receive this letter or need additional help signing up, please contact Julia Castro for assistance.

Recent Happenings

We have lots to celebrate so far this year:

  • MS 447’s first ever wrestling team capped a successful inaugural season with a trip to the Citywide Competition on Saturday, November 2nd.  Four wrestlers placed in the top four positions in their weight classes!  Congratulations to all of our wrestlers and their coaches!
  • Our newly updated website, MS447.org, is up and running.  The new website is your “one stop shop” for school news and events, PTA information, high school admissions, and letter day reminders. Check it out and update your web browser bookmarks.  Thanks to everyone who helped to make our new site a reality!
  • Our annual 6th grade trip to Camp Bernie went off without a hitch from October 23-25th.  Students, parents, teachers, and other staff had a great time getting to know each other and the weather was beautiful.  We are looking forward to our 7th and 8th grade trips to Boston and Washington DC in the spring!

Upstander Days and Internet Safety

Recent news events have reminded us that no age group is immune to bullying, and that young children, adolescents, and adults alike can be both bullies and victims.  As we work to make MS 447 an environment that is safe and accepting for all, students will be participating in Upstander Days, beginning with the 8th grade on Friday, December 6th.  In conjunction with the Bully Project, students will view the film Bully, explore its message, and learn how each of us can take an active role in stopping bullying.

In addition, Frank Laghezza of the Brooklyn District Attorney’s office will join us for discussions about cyberbullying and ways to stay safe online.  Families are invited to attend these talks, which will take place during the school day.  Visit the “News” section of MS447.org for dates and times for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade talks.

Sign Up for PupilPath

PupilPath is the best way to stay informed about what’s happening in your child’s classes.  You can view up-to-date assignments and grades, see calendars of upcoming work, and communicate with school staff, even if you don’t have their email addresses.  Teachers and staff also use PupilPath to reach out to parents about classroom goings-on.  Parents, if you aren’t signed up yet or need help accessing your account, visit the PupilPath Help Desk at Parent-Teacher Conferences.  Help us reach our goal of registering 100% of MS 447 families!

Opportunities to Get Involved

Looking for ways to get involved at school?  Some ideas are below.  You can sign up for many of these and find more information on the Volunteer Opportunities page under the “Support Us” section of this website.

  • Volunteer at the Book Fair November 19-21
  • Help out with our Barnes and Noble gift wrapping fundraiser on December 7th
  • Come to the next PTA meeting – Wednesday, November 20th at 6:00 pm
  • Chaperone an Exploration trip – ongoing, contact Eli Smith or Julia Castro

As always, we thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you next week at conferences!

Sincerely,

Dawn Valle
